It’s the end of the year and the perfect time to reflect on the past year to see if you accomplished all that you intended to. It is also a great time to make a plan for things to work on in the upcoming year.
It helps to have a checklist to go by, so I use the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa. These principles are not uniquely for someone that practices Kwanzaa. As you can see, they can help anyone question their actions and develop and plan of direction.
Here are the Kwanzaa principles and how I interpret them. Using these as a checklist, has helped me maintain some direction for each upcoming year:
Umoja: Unity – Are you united as a group, as a people, as a family, as a company, as a community, etc. for the same goals? If one group isn’t the right fit, join another one.
Kujichagulia – Self-Determination – Do you know what you want, where you want to be, where you are headed? Are you ensuring that you have the means and plan to get there? Read everything and get training whenever possible. I am working to improve my physical health and my business development.
Ujima – Collective Work and Responsibility – Are you working together as a group, as a people, as a family, as a company, as a community, etc. to achieve goals? We can control some of our destiny. Figure it out and do what you can – but it takes a village.
Ujaama – Cooperative Economics – Are you doing what you can to circulate the dollar where it can best support you, the community, your family? Are you working as a group to improve the economic condition of your family and the small businesses that are paramount to ensuring jobs in the local community?
Nia – Purpose – Have you defined your purpose and ensured that your efforts reflect it? How would people describe you? Is that what you expected as your legacy? I’ve been called the “Book lady” and that’s perfect – since my intent is to expose and educate through reading, making information available, guiding, etc.
Kuumba – Creativity – Are you using all of the abilities and options to achieve your goals? If not, what must be done to improve your talents, skills and abilities or what are some other approaches to get to your goal – and how can you attempt these approaches? Research and make a plan.
Imani – Faith – Do you believe it? If so, you can achieve it!
